Research Part 1: Genre, Target Audiences, and Production Companies

 

        The main focus will be on the breakdown of the genre, target audience, and similar production companies that our film will be based on. Genre helps viewers find a specific category that helps them distinguish different types of films they enjoy watching. Our film focuses on the genres of Drama and horror with hints of comedy in it (our film can also be classified as dramedy and horror). Generation Z and Millennials prefer Drama and horror genres making them very popular amongst teens and young adults. Comedies are also a common genre that many teens and young adults enjoy watching. Our target audience falls along these lines, gathering teens and young adults who are interested in dramedies and horror movies. We will also be representing diverse ranges of ages, race/ethnic backgrounds, cultures, attitudes, interests, and struggles to communicate with a wider range of audience. A survey was conducted by our group to demonstrate the common characteristics and interests of students. It provides us a better understanding of our audiences' beliefs, attitudes, personalities, and interests and has overall helped us achieve a better understanding of what our audience's preferences are.

Interests	1st respondent (Sophia): is thrilled by the horror and action genres in film.  2nd respondent (Gavin): chases edge-of-the seat, unsettling scenes included in the thriller film genre.  3rd respondent (Ardens): enjoys the imaginative visuals of the fantasy genre, but exhilarates in adrenaline-pumping action films, as well.
attitudes	1st respondent is fierce, but quiet, and an ambitious achiever in her studies, and aspires to be to make impactful change in the world, while retaining a wealthy wage. She enjoys making both hand-drawn and digital art, is bilingual (speaks English and Spanish), and applies herself into her work by using her prior knowledge of different school subjects to better complete assignments.  2nd respondent is ambitious when he tries, but can be impulsive, and attention-seeking at times, however, uses his charisma to inspire/build relationships with others. Instructors and his fellow peers tend to urge him to make better choices in life. To add, he enjoys playing instruments, as he is in the school band.  3rd respondent is responsible, commonly described as “reserved,” and is a high achiever not only in academics but is loyal to the values/belief systems that he holds. He is quiet, refined, observant, focused on his goals, and values his education.

values/beliefs	1st respondent: Believes in hard-work, values originality, and creativity, and being financially successful in life, while being happy.  2nd respondent: Aspires to be academically and mentally greater, values fitness, authentically expresses his emotions, opinions, and behaviors, believes in making sensitive jokes to stir up conversation or to bring attention to different political, sex-related, or racial issues/current events, and believes in going with the flow in life.  3rd respondent: Holds a strong moral compass, exudes honesty, vigilance, responsibility, and stoicism. He is self-motivated to prioritize his studies and academic success but also allowing for some down time.

Reflection

           Our group researched the psychographics and demographics of our audience, as well as we searched for films that are comparable to ours. This research helped us find potential views and what interests the audience and find existing examples of movies with a similar layout to our film plan. We looked upon a Netflix Original film produced by Lionsgate Productions called, "White Noise." This film is similar to my group’s movie idea as it discusses a controlled society after an unexpected tragedy struck in this previously calm, Suburban family neighborhood, that inflicted chaos unknown to the inhabitants. The genre of this 2022 film is Horror Dramedy, which is beneficial to helping our group find the key elements that go into producing a film with those genres.
